Powering Progress: The Macaúbas Landfill Gas Project in Brazil

Written by Lauren Flatt, 29.04.25
Digital Beehive commits to environmental innovation and sustainability

Brazil, known for its vibrant culture and lush landscapes, faces a significant environmental challenge as the fifth-largest producer of waste in the world.

In 2015 alone, the country generated approximately 79.9 million tonnes of municipal solid waste, translating to about 1.071 kg per person daily. A significant portion of this waste is in landfills, where it decomposes and releases methane. This potent greenhouse gas is 34 times more impactful on global warming than carbon dioxide.

Amidst this pressing issue, the Macaúbas Landfill Gas Project is a crucial initiative in Sabará, Minas Gerais. By harnessing the problematic emissions from the Central de Tratamento de Resíduos Macaúbas landfill, this project mitigates environmental damage and transforms a critical problem into a sustainable solution.

Innovative technology for a sustainable future

The core of the Macaúbas project involves an advanced landfill gas collection system that transitions from a passive to an active system with monitored flaring and electricity generation capabilities. This sophisticated approach ensures that methane emissions are effectively captured and used to generate electricity rather than escaping into the atmosphere.

Since its implementation, the project has achieved remarkable results, with a current monitoring phase showing emission reductions of 102,580 tCO2e. These efforts prevent harmful methane from contributing to the greenhouse effect and provide a cleaner, renewable energy source that feeds into the local power grid.

Economic and environmental benefits

Significant economic impacts complement the environmental benefits of the Macaúbas projects. The project fosters local employment and income generation by requiring skilled operators to manage and maintain the extraction and electricity generation system. This dual benefit underscores the project’s role in promoting sustainable economic development alongside environmental conservation.

Landfill methane: A global challenge and opportunity

Globally, landfills contribute 12% of the world’s methane emissions, highlighting the critical need for projects like Macaúbas. Capturing landfill methane prevents this potent gas from exacerbating climate change and displaces the need for fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, thus reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.
