The lush rainforests of Cambodia, teeming with diverse life, are a treasure trove of biodiversity. Unfortunately, these rainforests face dire threats from rapid deforestation for agriculture, and unsustainable practices such as hunting, logging, and fishing, jeopardising both its rich biodiversity and the local communities dependent on the forest.
The Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary (KSWS) is a 2,926.9 km² protected area of mixed seasonal tropical forest in eastern Cambodia, located in Mondulkiri and Kratié provinces. This sanctuary, originally established in 2009, is nestled within the ancestral lands of the Bunong people. It straddles two ecologically significant regions – the Annamite Mountains and the lower Mekong dry forests, making it a vital habitat for 41 globally threatened vertebrate species, including Asian Elephants, various primates, wild cattle, and rare birds like the Giant Ibis and Green Peafowl.
The Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary Project
In response to these challenges, the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary (KSWS) project, a collaborative effort between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Wildlife Conservation Society, was initiated in 2010. Covering over 290,000 hectares, KSWS is a bastion of biodiversity, hosting 84 globally threatened species and the largest populations of black-shanked douc and yellow-cheeked crested gibbons. The REDD project area specifically protects 166,983 hectares of vital forest land.
The sanctuary not only serves as a refuge for wildlife but also as a cultural heartland for the Indigenous Bunong people, whose lives and traditions are intimately connected to the forest. Despite its significance, the sanctuary was at a high risk of deforestation due to agricultural expansion and illegal logging. The KSWS REDD+ Project has been a game-changer, preventing over 20 million tons of CO2e emissions and saving 25,000 hectares of forest from devastation.
The project’s impact extends beyond environmental protection. It has generated employment opportunities, bolstered education and training programs, and initiated an ecotourism venture to benefit local communities. A notable achievement is the near $1 million distribution through the Cash for Communities (C4C) program. This initiative channels revenue from carbon credit sales directly to the local communities, empowering them to decide on its use in vital areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development, including wells and bridges. The KSWS project stands as a beacon of sustainable development, intertwining environmental conservation with community empowerment and cultural preservation.
