The Vichada department, located on the eastern plains near the Venezuela border and within the Orinoco River basin, exemplifies this struggle with a staggering loss of 500,000 hectares of forest between 1990 and 2005—a clear call to action for conservation efforts.
Enter the Matavén REDD+ project, a beacon of hope in the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest. This ambitious initiative safeguards 1,150,212 hectares of tropical forest, directly addressing the drivers of deforestation by providing sustainable livelihood alternatives to local small-scale farmers. By employing community members as forest rangers and fostering sustainable economic activities, the project not only combats emissions but also enriches local lives and biodiversity.
The Matavén Forest: A Lifeline for Communities and Nature
At the core of the Matavén REDD+ project supported by Ecologi, are nearly 16,000 Indigenous people who call this region home. Their lives have been transformed through co-projects focusing on education, healthcare, dental services, sanitation, and food security—all while ensuring the preservation of their ancestral lands.
